Three Tips For How To Stick To Your New Year’s Resolution

1. Make Sure Your Resolution Is Doable

This will look different for different people. If you are a set-your-mind-to-it-and-get-it-done type of person, maybe you can have a resolution like, “I’m going to stop smoking and start eating healthy and take vitamins every day and exercise five times a week so I can lose 30 pounds by the end of the year.” For most, that sentence probably sounds overwhelming, and that’s okay. You don’t need to change your entire life in one day. Pick one thing and focus on it, whether it is eating healthier, dropping a bad habit, or exercising more.

2. Make Mini Goals

This is something we’ve talked about before at Eternal Fitness: the importance of mini-goals. Rather than picturing where you want to be next December, focus on where you want to be in a month, or even a week. Every day that you stick to your resolution is a victory – but you might not see the results you expect right away. So celebrate each day as a success and set attainable goals like losing a couple pounds. Once you do that set a new goal to lose a couple more. That way, you don’t get discouraged when your final goal seems so far away.

3. Set A Time Frame

Most people try to start their New Year’s Resolution on January 1st. Coincidentally, most people are hungover from the festivities of the night before. It’s no wonder that most resolutions fail before they even get off the ground. If your resolution was to go to the gym and eat healthy starting January 1st, when the day comes you might feel the need to lay in bed or eat some greasy food, and that’s okay. Don’t let this feel like a failure. Maybe you want to start on January 2nd, or 3rd, and so forth. Maybe you want to wait until the kids are back in school, or for a weekend so you can take time and go grocery shopping. Pick a day that will work for you, or plan out your resolution and when the time feels right, throw your whole self into it.
